How the calculation works

This calculator assumes your current grade excludes the final exam and that the final is the only graded work remaining.

Final course grade = Current grade × (1 − Final weight) + Exam score × Final weight

Exam score needed = [Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)] ÷ Final weight
Important: Use your syllabus for your school's grading cutoffs, rounding rules, and minimum exam requirements. If you still have assignments or other tests remaining, your final result may differ.

1. How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

Start by checking your current grade in your gradebook and finding the final exam's weight in your course syllabus. You
can use the calculator to estimate the exam score you need for each class and plan ahead for your finals.

1. Enter Your Current Grade
Under Grade Now, enter your current percentage (88), points earned and possible (176/200), or letter grade (B+). If you
know your exact percentage or points, use those for a more accurate result. When you enter a letter grade, the calculator
uses the midpoint of its percentage range. Adding a class name is optional.

2. Enter the Final Exam Weight
In the Final Weight field, enter the percentage of your overall course grade determined by the final exam. For example,
if your final is worth 20% of your course grade, enter 20.

3.Choose Your Target Grade
Select the letter grade you want to achieve under Goal. The You Need result will show the exam score required to reach
that target. Click + Add Class to plan for additional courses, or select Try Sample Classes to explore an example.

Common Mistake to Avoid

Always enter your current grade before the final exam is included. If your gradebook treats the ungraded final as a zero, the displayed average may be lower than your actual grade so far.

This calculation assumes the final exam is the only graded work remaining. If you still have homework, projects, quizzes, or other tests to complete, those grades can also affect your final course average.

Understanding Your Results

Each class displays its own required exam score under You Need. This helps you identify which finals require the most preparation and set realistic study priorities. When you load the sample classes, you can also see how different current grades, exam weights, and target grades affect the scores you need.

Example Grade Data
Biology: 88%
Algebra II: 81.5%
English: 94%
History: 72%
Study Tip: Focus first on subjects that need the highest final exam scores. Check each course's grading weights and grade boundaries before setting your final exam targets.

“Already safe” describes the math. It doesn’t mean you can skip the exam.

2. What Grade Do I Need on My Final Exam?

The exam score you need depends on your current course grade, the percentage of your grade determined by the final, and your desired overall result. For example, if your current grade is 88%, the final exam is worth 20%, and you want to finish with an A− at 90%, you will need to score 98% on the final exam.

The Final Grade Calculator helps you answer common questions as exam day approaches:

. What score do I need on my final to pass the course?
. Can I still earn an A or a B?
. How much will my overall grade drop if I fail the final?
. What will my final course grade be if I score 70%, 80%, or 90% on the exam?

If you don't know your current course average, calculate it first using your assignment scores, earned points, or grading
category weights. Once you have your current grade, you can estimate the exam score needed to reach your goal.

3. How to Calculate the Score You Need on Your Final Exam

Your final course grade depends on your current average and your final exam score, weighted according to how much each contributes to your overall grade. When using the formula, enter grades as percentages and convert the final exam weight into a decimal. For example, a 20% exam weight becomes 0.20.

Formula

Final Course Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Final Exam Weight) + Final Exam Score × Final Exam Weight

Required Exam Score = [Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Exam Weight)] ÷ Final Exam Weight

Example: Calculate the Required Final Exam Score

Suppose you currently have an 88% in Biology, your final exam is worth 20% of your overall grade, and you want to
finish with an A−, which requires at least 90%.
You can use the formula above to determine the minimum score you need on the final exam to reach your target.

Verify Your Calculation

Multiply your current grade by its course weight, then add the weighted final exam score.

(88 × 0.80) + (98 × 0.20) = 90%

Conclusion: You need 98% on the final exam to achieve an overall course grade of 90%, assuming the final is worth 20%.

If the required exam score includes decimal places, the calculator rounds it up to the nearest tenth to help you meet
your target mathematically. However, your actual result may vary depending on your instructor’s grading
and rounding policies.

How to Calculate Your Final Course Grade

You can also use the first formula to estimate your overall course grade for a specific exam score. For example, if your
current grade is 88% and the final exam accounts for 20% of your course grade, enter your expected exam score to see
how it affects your final result.

4. Can I still get an A, B or C?

A goal can be out of reach while the next letter down is still possible. For the Biology example, an 88% before a
final worth 20%, these are the scores you need on the standard scale:

Important grading note: Schools set their own grade cutoffs. Always check your course syllabus if its grading scale differs from these targets. A score above 100% may require extra credit or other adjustments.

5.How much does your final exam affect your grade?

The final’s weight decides how far your grade can move. A 30% final has more pull than a 10% one, but even a 10% final can change your letter. Starting from an 88%:

How the calculation works

Final course grade = (Current grade × remaining course weight) + (Final exam score × final exam weight)

Example with a 20% final:
(88 × 0.80) + (98 × 0.20) = 90%
Assumptions: Your current grade remains at 88%, your final exam score is between 0% and 100%, and there are no extra-credit opportunities or grade-replacement rules. Actual results may vary depending on your instructor's grading policies.

A final exam with a larger weight can have a bigger impact on your overall grade, whether your score is high or low. Keep these factors in mind when calculating the score you need:

Courses graded by points: Calculate the final exam's weight by dividing its points by the total points available in the course, including the final. For example, a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course accounts for 20% of the total grade. If you have earned 704 out of 800 points before the final, enter 704/800 under Grade Now and 20 under Final Weight. If your course uses weighted exam categories, follow the grading method outlined in your syllabus

.Rounding policies: Your instructor's rounding rules can affect the score needed to reach a target. For example, if a grade of 89.5% rounds up to 90%, you may need a lower exam score than if 90% is required without rounding. In the Biology example, this could reduce the required score from 98% to 95.5%. Only rely on this adjustment if your course policy allows it. Some schools, such as Fairfax County Public Schools, have specific rules for rounding final averages.

Dropped or replaced grades: If your final exam replaces a lower test score or your instructor drops the lowest assignment, your current grade may change. Recalculate your average using the updated grading rules before estimating your required exam score. Also, check whether your course requires you to pass the final exam separately, regardless of your overall grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade do I need on my final exam to pass?

The score you need depends on your current course grade, the final exam's weight, and the minimum passing grade. Enter these values into the Final Grade Calculator to estimate the exam score required to pass.

Can I still get an A if I have a B before the final?

Yes, depending on your current percentage and the final exam's weight. If the score needed to reach an A is 100% or less, the goal is mathematically achievable under the calculator's assumptions.

What happens if I get a zero on my final exam?

A zero can significantly lower your overall grade, especially when the final carries a large percentage of the course grade. Use your current grade and exam weight to calculate the result and see how much your average could change.

How much does a final exam affect my overall grade?

The impact depends on the exam's weight. A final worth 40% of your course grade affects your overall result more than one worth 10%. Check your syllabus to find the correct percentage.

What if my final exam replaces my lowest test score?

If your final replaces a previous test or your instructor drops a low score, your current grade and the exam's effect may change. Update your grade based on the course policy before using the calculator.
