1. Interactive Test Score Lookup Table

Use this interactive grade chart to quickly convert test scores into percentages without doing the math yourself. Find the
number of correct answers and match it to the total number of questions to see the score at a glance. The chart covers tests
with 3 to 30 questions by default, displays the first 10 rows initially, and lets you expand the table with Show All to view
every possible score.

Teachers can use the chart to grade quizzes consistently and save time when checking multiple papers. Students can also check
their results as soon as they finish a test. Switch to Percent + Letter to display letter grades alongside percentages, or choose
Wrong under Rows to calculate results based on the number of incorrect answers. Enter a test length in the Questions field
to highlight the matching column and navigate to it. You can also extend the chart for tests with up to 100 questions.

Your selected display options, row format, and question count can be restored on your next visit. Use Save to store a preferred
setup and a selected score on your device under My Saves. For convenient access on mobile, add the chart to your home screen
and use it whenever you need to check a test score.

2. How to Use the Grade Chart

Select the Total Number of Questions
Look at the top row of the chart to find the total number of questions on the test. You can also enter the number in
the Questions field to jump to the matching column.

Locate the Number of Correct or Incorrect Answers
Use the left-hand column to find the student's number of correct answers. If you prefer to count missed questions,
change the Rows setting to Wrong and find the number of incorrect answers instead.

Find the Percentage and Letter Grade
Follow the selected row across to the test-length column. The intersecting cell displays the score as a percentage.
Depending on your display settings, it may also show the corresponding letter grade. Hover over or tap a cell to
highlight its row and column for easier reading.

Example: Suppose a student answers 20 questions correctly on a 25-question quiz. Enter 25 in the Questions field,
then find 20 in the correct-answer rows. The chart shows 80%, which is a B− on the plus/minus grading scale.

You can tap a score to keep it highlighted while exploring other parts of the chart. Tap it again to clear the selection.
If you want to share a specific result, use Copy Link in the Options menu to create a link that preserves the selected
score, making it easier to share results with parents, students, or classmates.

3. How to work out a test percentage

Percent = Number right ÷ Questions × 100

Every cell in the chart comes from this one line. Here it is for 18 right on a 25-question spelling test.

How is the score calculated?

You answered 18 out of 25 questions correctly. Divide 18 by 25 to get 0.72, then multiply by 100 to get 72%. Based on the grade range provided, your letter grade is C−.
Test Score Calculator · Step-by-step grade summary

When you use the wrong-answer method, subtract the number of incorrect answers from the total questions to find
how many were correct. For example, if a student misses 3 questions on a 20-question test, they answer 17 correctly.
Divide 17 by 20 and multiply by 100 to get a score of 85%. You can also calculate the penalty for each mistake:
on a 20-question test, every incorrect answer reduces the score by 5 percentage points. Three mistakes therefore
lower the score by 15 points, from 100% to 85%.

Some scores produce decimal percentages, so the grade chart rounds them according to the selected display setting.
For example, 2 correct answers out of 3 equal 66.666…%, which displays as 67% when using whole-number
percentages. Letter grades are assigned using the chart's grading scale and its rounding rules. If you select
One Decimal under Options, the same result appears as 66.7%. The displayed letter grade may differ near a grading
cutoff, so check the selected grading scale when a score is close to a boundary.

4. Standard letter grade and percentage scale

The letters in the chart follow the plus/minus scale used across this site. A+ and A both count as 4.0 grade points.

Grade Scale & GPA Reference · Academic quick guide

Many schools use a standard 10-point grading scale without plus or minus grades. Under this system, scores from 90%
to 100% earn an A, 80% to 89% earn a B, 70% to 79% earn a C, and 60% to 69% earn a D. Any score below 60%
receives an F. To apply this system to your results, open Options and select 10-Point under Grading Scale. The letter
grades throughout the chart will update to match the selected scale.

Keep in mind that your school or instructor's grading policy takes priority over the chart's default settings. Schools may
use different grading boundaries or rounding methods, so check the official policy when you need an exact result. For
example, Fairfax County Public Schools uses a rounding rule under which grades on a 100-point scale are rounded up
to the next whole number when the decimal portion is 0.5 or higher. This follows the same general rounding approach
used by the chart.

5. Calculate custom test sizes with our EZ Grader

A fixed table stops working when a test doesn’t fit it: 120 questions, half credit on a short answer, or a whole class to score
at once. The EZ Grader takes any number of questions, accepts half points, and scores every paper you enter with a class average, highest and lowest.

One case neither tool covers is a test where questions carry different points, such as 2-point multiple choice with a
10-point essay. There, add up the points earned, divide by the points possible and multiply by 100: 41 of 50 points is
82%, a B−, however many items were missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a grade chart used for?

A grade chart helps you convert the number of correct answers on a test into a percentage or letter grade. It saves time by showing possible scores in a table, so you do not need to calculate each result manually.

How do I calculate my test percentage using a grade chart?

Find the total number of questions in the top row, then locate the number of correct answers in the left column. The cell where they meet shows your percentage. For example, 18 correct answers out of 20 questions equals 90%.

Can I use the grade chart for incorrect answers?

Yes. Change the Rows setting to Wrong to look up scores by the number of missed questions. The chart calculates the corresponding percentage based on the total number of questions.

What is the difference between a percentage grade and a letter grade?

A percentage grade shows your score numerically, such as 85%, while a letter grade represents that score using a letter, such as a B. The letter assigned to a percentage depends on the grading scale selected by your school or instructor.

Does the grade chart support different grading scales?

Yes. You can choose a standard 10-point grading scale or a plus/minus scale, depending on the available options. The chart updates its letter grades to match the selected system. Always check your school's grading policy for the exact grade boundaries and rounding rules.
